Sansevieria Moonshine Propagation

Welcome to our guide to sansevieria moonshine propagation. This one of my favorite plants of all the dracaena trifasciata. It is fairly easy to propagate, if slow growing. I cover everything in step by step instructions with pictures of my own propagations.

Welcome to our guide to propagation of one my favorite succulents, the Sansevieria moonshine.

We cover 3 methods of sansevieria moonshine propagation:

  • Propagation By Division
  • By Cutting In Water
  • Propagation In Soil

Sansevieria Moonshine Propagation By Division

What You’ll Need

You will need:

  • A Sansevieria Moonshine plant
  • A sharp pair of scissors or knife (make sure they are clean)
  • A second pot
  • Some soil (a succulent soil is great).

Division:

Make sure your plant is big enough that it has started to produce smaller ‘pup’ plants around the base of the main plant. Take the plant out of it pot and shake off as much soil as you can (keep it for later).

Gently take the smaller pups off the main plant by pulling them really slowly. They may be attached, be careful if you have to break some of the plant.

Leave the plants aside for a day so the open wounds heal over.

Then pot them back up separately in heir own pots (you can use the soil that you saved from earlier).

What You’ll Need

You will need:

  • A Sansevieria Moonshine plant
  • A sharp pair of scissors or knife (make sure they are clean)
  • A pen or pencil
  • A cup or jar
  • Filtered tap water

Water Prop:

I like to root my cuttings in water, then move them to soil later when they are well rooted. I find I get the best success rate this way. I can also get a lot more cuttings as I can cut them shorter and so get more cuttings.

You need to cut off a whole leaf/blade from your plant.

Then get a pencil and draw arrows up the back of it. This is really important as you need to put them in the water the right way up or they will not root.

marking the cutting

Then cut it into pieces, you want each cutting to be at least 2cm or half and inch.

cutting the cutting into more pieces

Then put all the cuttings in cup that hold them upright. But do not add water yet.

You do not want them to fall over, so a small enough jar is best, I did to have one small enough as you can see in the pictures below I have added some small toy dinosaurs to keep them upright!

using some household items to keep the cuttings upright in water

After 2 or 3 days you can add water. You want it to go about halfway up the cuttings.

Keep the cuttings somewhere with plenty of indirect light and top the water up every 3 or 4 days if needed to maintain the level.

It can take about 3 months for them to root well (they are fairly slow growing) but have patience, they should root over 2 or 3 months.

You can then pot them up in to a good cactus and succulent soil.

Sansevieria Moonshine Propagation In Soil

What You’ll Need

You will need:

  • A Sansevieria Moonshine plant
  • A sharp pair of scissors or knife (make sure they are clean)
  • A second pot
  • Some soil (a succulent soil is great).

For soil cuttings you can use the same method of chopping up your Sansevieria as I mentioned in the water prop section above, but instead of putting them in water you can put them direct into soil. You need to make sure the wounds are calloused over before putting them in the soil and they need to be the same way up that they were on the plant, so use a pencil to mark them.

You want the soil to be moist but not soaking wet, then cover the pot with a bag to keep humidity high. Keep it slightly open so some air can move while keeping humidity high. Keep the soil moist for a few months and they should root well over 3 months or so and then after that start to put out small new growth points and growth new plants from these.
