Tip: we recommend Etsy for buying plants. Look for the best rated seller you can, and try to buy as close to your home as possible so the plant does not travel too far.

Light Needs

Bright indirect sunlight is best to encourage growth of those leaves. A grow light is great too to keep a constant environment.

How Often to Water

You should water your anthurium splendidum when the top 40% of soil is dry. Check it twice a week.

Anthurium Splendidum Care Fertilizer

Feed once a month in summer, with a well-diluted fertilizer with a high nitrogen content.

Soil

An anthurium splendidum needs a very well draining compost, a mixture of orchid mix with your compost is great. For more on anthurium soil (what to buy and how to make your own) see our guide here: Anthurium Soil.

Tip: A plant cabinet is ideal, as you need to control a lot of the conditions. They can be tough to look after, as they require high humidity (80% or more!) and steady temperatures, under 25°C (77°F) ideally. They can suffer quickly if these needs are not met. And 80% humidity or more! They need a little bit of air to circulate because of the high humidity, to avoid rot.

When To Repot

Check your plant in Spring and repot them up a size or two if they need it.

Anthurium Splendidum Care Humidity

The ideal humidity is 80%, I know it’s high! But they really like humidity, and can quickly suffer if not given enough. Make sure there is some moving air too to avoid rot or mold.

Temperature

18°C to 25°C (64-77°F) is best, they do not like to get too hot and can start to go down quickly over 25°C (77°F) so they don’t need special requirements in most homes other than to not let them get too cold in winter.

How To Propagate Anthurium Splendidum

The way to propagate your splendidum is to divide it at the base. Follow these steps:

  1. You need to wait until the plant is big enough so that it has a second plant at the base you can split it off at the roots.
  2. Take it out of its pot and take as much soil off the roots as you can.
  3. Take the smaller plant off the bigger plant. Be really careful at the point at which they are connected and try to limit damage to the plants. Make sure you tak stems and roots with the smaller plant.
  4. Then you can plant the plants up individually.
