Light Needs

Bright but indirect sunlight is ideal. If they get direct sun it can burn the variegated areas of the leaves, but these leaves need as much indirect sun as possible as they cannot convert energy as well as non-variegated plants.

How Often to Water A Hoya Krimson Princess

Check the soil once a week and only water it if totally dry. The biggest killer of hoyas is root rot due to sitting in waterlogged soil. After watering tip out any excess water in the saucer under the plant. Avoid overly wet soil, this plant does not like a soggy bottom!

Tip: make sure you do not water the plant until the soil is completely dry all the way down, as the biggest killer of hoyas is root rot. If in doubt, underwater it!

Fertilizer

Feed it a balanced fertilizer once a month in spring and summer. They’ll be fine without fertilizer but it can encourage faster growth and support the plant through flowering better.

Hoya Krimson Princess Soil

This hoya must be in a really well draining soil, as in the wild it does not grow in soil, but in bark on trees. So plant it in a mix of soil, perlite and orchid bark (in equal parts). For more on hoya soil (what to buy and how to make your own) see our guide here: Hoya Soil.

Tip: make sure you give them a soil mix suitable for epiphytes that has plenty of orchid bark, as they hate to sit in heavy wet soil and will get root rot easily. Remember that they grow on tree bark in the wild and not in soil. For more info see our guide: Hoya Soil.

When To Repot

The hoya krimson princess is ok to be a little bit pot bound. They like it to an extent. Repot them every couple of years in Spring.

Humidity

60% is ideal, they will be ok with less though and be fine in most homes. Aim for good humidity as they can rally thrive if given the right levels.

Temperature

15-28°C (59-82°F) is ideal during the day, aim for 10°C (50°F) as a minimum temperature at night. They will be fine in almost all home temperatures.

How To Propagate Hoya Krimson Princess

You can propagate a krimson princess fairly easily in soil, follow these steps:

  1. Take a stem cuttings with 3 or 4 nodes (sets of leaves).
  2. Strip the leaves from the bottom node or two, which we will stick into the soil. They shold not have any leaves on. You should only have leaves on the nodes that will be above the soil.
  3. Stick the cuttings into a pot of soil (water it first) so that the bare nodes are under the soil and the leaves are above, but not touching the soil.
  4. Put them in a warm and bright place in your home with plenty of indrect sunlight but no direct.
  5. Keep the soil moist but not sodden.
  6. They should start to root over the next month or two.
  7. Once they are rooted well they will start to grow new leaves. This can take 2 to 3 months.

FAQs and Common Problems

Overwatering is a very common issue as hoyas are epiphytic – they do not like heavy soil it must be really well draining and they must be allowed to dry out before watering again.

Can It Grow In Leca?

They can grow in leca just fine, I would propagate cutting r two in water for a month or so an then move it to leca when the roots are established.

Can It Grow In Water?

You can grow them in water if you take a cuttings and root it in water. Then you can keep it here indefinitely. It won’t grow as fast in soil, but it can survive in water no problem.

Hoya Krimson Princess Reverted

If your krimson princess is reverting and turning all green, you can cut the green leaves off, back to the last variegated leaf. This can encourage the next leaf that grows to be variegated too. Also give it plenty of direct sunlight as reverting can be due to lack of light.

Why Is My Hoya Krimson Princess Drooping?

They droop when under and overwatered. You should want to check the soil weekly, but only water it if the soil is dry from the time before, this way you won’t under or over water your plant.

When Do Hoya Krimson Princess Flower?

It is can flower in spring and summer when the plant is mature. They need plenty of indirect sunlight to bloom.
